St. Loucas, Archbishop of Crimea was born on the 14th of April 1877 in the town of Kerch, East Crimea. He studied Medicine for the sole purpose of helping his suffering, fellow human beings. In an incredibly short period of time, he acquired a lot of knowledge and experience and became a professor at the Medical School of the University.
He was a pioneer and an exceptional surgeon, performing exceedingly difficult and challenging operations on the kidneys, brain, and heart as the hospital’s Head Surgeon. He especially excelled in ophthalmic surgeries. On the 18th of May 1923, he was ordained bishop and as such he devoted the rest of his life in the service of his fellow co-patriots within the Russian territorial area.
Hierarch Loucas was imprisoned, tortured and exiled for many years by the Soviet Regime.
He passed away on the 11th of June 1961 at Simferopol in Crimea.
In November 1995, his holiness was canonized by the Ukrainian Orthodox Church and his memory is celebrated every year on the 11th of June.
St. Loucas was a man of service, self-sacrifice and full of love for his fellow man. He is a contemporary saint who performs miracles and gives us consolation even to this day!
